Green like Composites - Technologically advanced materials for environmental sustainability
Time:14:00 - 17:00
Place: Canova conference hall, Service Centre, 1st floor Organizer: CarraraFiere -
A conference dedicated to materials, polymers and composites eco sustainables. Compotec, the Italian Composites Show, as usual very attentive to the newest challenges, understands the importance of the environmental problems and dedicates this edition to green materials and eco-sustainability, presenting this Conference that will discuss the subject of composites materials characterised by a reduced environmental impact of raw materials, processes, products and recycling. A matter of consequence Sustainability, industrial ecology, eco-efficiency, green chemistry and new laws, are pushing the development of the next generation of materials, products, and processes. Bio-Composites (Natural/Biofiber) are emerging as a viable alternative to glass fiber reinforced composites especially in automotive and building product applications. The combination of biofibers such as kenaf, hemp, flax, jute and sisal with polymer matrices from both nonrenewable and renewable resources to produce composite materials that are competitive with synthetic composites requires special attention, i.e., biofiber-matrix interface and novel processing. Natural fiber/reinforced polypropylene composites have attained commercial attraction in automotive industries. Using natural fibers with polymers based on renewable resources will allow many environmental issues to be solved.
Object of the Conference The road towards really "green" composites is still very long, nevertheless Compotec is an exhibition aimed to innovation and this Conference will introduce new technologies and new products and invite both producers and users to confront and discuss in order to get answers to questions and doubts. The Conference will take place over two days, 8 and 9 February. Industry technicians, researchers, designers, producers and distributors, will present the latest news of the sector. Chairmen are Prof. Marino Quaresimin and Ing.Alberto Cimadoro. Participants will be composites industry representatives, technicians, designers, distributors, academics, researchers. Program

MathFem: RTM process demonstration and simulation with RTM-Worx
Time:15:00 - 16:00
Place: Pav. B - Sailing Area Organizer: MathFem Srl
MathFem S.r.l. is specialised in the application of mathematical (math) and finite element modelling (fem) techniques of multiphysical simulations. Careful of the development of composite parts, MathFem offers virtual simulations for the verification of structural performance and productive technologies such as:
- Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM): a low pressure moulding process where the resin and the catalyst are injected in a closed mould containing the reinforcements or the previously shaped piece. The moulds can be correctly dimensioned and the components are well finished on both sides of the surface.
- Controlled Vacuum Infusion (CVI): the process of controlled vacuum infusion, where the reinforcement fabric is contained between the mould and a plastic hermetic membrane, in which pneumatic vacuum is obtained, provoking the entrance of catalysed resin which impregnates the fabric. Particularly convenient for the realization of large parts such as boat hulls or windmill blades.
MathFem promotes and supports RTM-Worx developed by Polyworx, the innovative flow simulation software for RTM and CVI, reducing prototype costs and increasing the quality of the finished product. With scientific and mathematically precise methods RTM-Worx can analyse the physical phenomena which occur during moulding on the computer, hence: - visualise the resin's flow path
- calculate and reduce injection time
- assess the impact of variations in resin and fabric properties
- optimize location of runners, injection and venting ports
- eliminate dry spots
- establish the process window
OCV ITALIA, part of Owens Corning Group, is the most important producer of Unifilo®, a glass fiber reinforcement for closed mould technologies. Unifilo® is a continuous filament mat chemically bond. The technical limit of Unifilo® is the lack of deformation which makes it inappropriate for moulds of complex shapes. For this reason, during the last years, OCV ITALIA developed a new concept of continuous filament mat mechanically bond: Uniconform®. This new type of bond has made it possible for continuous filament mats to be highly drapable, ideal for the use of closed moulds. Furthermore, since years OCV ITALIA has been producing Unifilo® preforms for RTM technologies. Respect to the basic Unifilo®, these preforms allow an immediate dressing of the mould but nevertheless have the inconvenience of not completely filling the mould in correspondence of sharp angles. Thanks to further development it was possible to carry out a new concept of preform, working with the advantages of Uniconform®. The Uniconform® preform allows a quick dressing, ensures total filling of the mould and improves the surface aspect of the moulded part. Aim of the event MATHFEM, in collaboration with OCV ITALIA, will give a demonstration of the application of preforms in fiber in the RTM light technique supported by computational process simulation techniques. Programme - 15:00 Welcome, presentation of MATHFEM, Eng. Gianluca Massaccesi
- 15:10 Presentation of OCV ITALIA, Eng. Manuela Astro
- 15:15 Demonstration of light RTM process and computational simulation techniques
- 15:45 Questions and answers

Refitting, restoring, restyling: the many faces of a developing industry
How to enhance the existing with a look to the future.
Time:10:00 - 13:00
Place: Service Centre Conference Hall Organizer: Seatec/CarraraFiere -
For the seventh year, Seatec presents the technical Seminar dedicated to marine construction. It will take place on Friday the 10th, at 10 a.m. This event, treating the many aspects of marine construction, since 2004 has aroused the interest of yacht designers, technicians, dealers. This year seminar is dedicated to a topical subject: the refitting and restoring of boats and yachts. In this sector, the refitting activities are constantly increasing: refurbishing, renovation, updating and restoring is a business worth millions of Euros. Chairman of the event is Massimo-Musio Sale, well known yacht designer and a guru of this specific field. Massimo affirms: "Valorising what already exists, help the renovation and conservation processes for the marine products.... Recognise and apply the processes of restoring, refitting, restyling. Multi faced strategies having a common aim: the valorisation of boats from the exceptional ones to the very simple and recent. Info: Dott.ssa Simonetta Pegorari (simo.pegorari@gmail.com)
